這篇文章里"packed"是"異常擁擠的，擠滿人的"意思，"packed tight"即"緊緊地擠在一起"，tight更說明家長之多，所以譯文翻譯為"擁堵"。Around the school gate意思是整個校門口周圍都圍住了，進一步說明擁堵之壯觀場面。

總之，parents of exam takers at one school in Beijing were packed tight around the school gate我們對這個場景不能再熟悉了，所以就是"考生家長擁堵在校門口"。

9. jostling 美[?d?ɑ?sl??]：可以表示"爭搶，爭奪"。如金融時報上的這句話：

When a dozen customers are jostling at the till trying to buy the same packet of cornflakes it probably means the price is too low.如果有十幾個顧客在收銀臺前搶著購買同一包玉米片，這可能意味著價格太低了。

還可以表示(在人群中)擠，推，撞，搡。如經(jīng)濟學人上是這么說的： amid a sea of jostling photographers面對著大群擁擠的拍照者。

10. "the front of the crowd"，指"人群前面"。"jostling to get to the front of the crowd"直譯就是"推擠著人群，想要走到人群最前面"，但是這么翻比較口語化，所以翻譯為"向前推擠著"，不需要再加"人群"了，因為前面已經(jīng)有主語"考生家長們"了。"jostling to get to the front of the crowd"足見父母都在焦急等待著自己的孩子。

11. a white metal barrier：直譯就是"白色金屬障礙物"，但是不能這么翻，它指的是"白色護欄"。

12. hold back：一詞多義。它可以表示"猶豫，退縮"。

如經(jīng)濟學人上有句話是這么說的：

But if they hold back for too long, the markets will strike first.

但如果他們猶豫的時間太長，市場就會先一步萎縮。

"its entrance sealed with"表示"入口被封住"，而且是持續(xù)一段時間的封住。

13. "where a white metal barrier held them back"是"the front of the crowd"的定語從句。即在人群最前面有白色護欄擋著。人群都想往最前面走，但最前面有護欄擋著，所以翻譯為"最前面有白色護欄擋著"。

第二句：Special security guards handed out water bottles and cheap paper fans, while another manned a first aid stand under a large parasol.

特種安保人員在校門口分發(fā)著瓶裝水和便宜的紙扇，還有醫(yī)護人員在大遮陽傘下的急救站處工作。

1. Special security guards：翻譯為"特種安保人員"。每年高考時，學校不僅安排其自身的保安，還有屬地公安機關(guān)人員也加入了護航考生的大軍。

2. hand out：表示"分發(fā)，散發(fā)"。

例如voa上的這句話：

Many Thais turned out to cheer them on or hand out bottles of water to protesters perched on pickup trucks and motorcycles.

很多泰國人到場給他們助威，或給站在皮卡和摩托上的抗議者分發(fā)瓶裝水。

3. "瓶裝水"，可以說"water bottles"，也可以說"bottles of water"。這里翻譯為"礦泉水"或者"瓶裝水"都可以。因為一般如高考、各大會議、救災等各種場合分發(fā)的都是礦泉水。

4. paper fans：指"紙扇"。"fan"表示"扇子"。

5. While表示"當……時"，兩件事同時發(fā)生。它的意思是：這些特種安保人員在分發(fā)瓶裝水和紙扇的同時，還有人在做……。舉個例子：

They were grinning and watching while one man laughed and poured beer over the head of another.

也可以表示"把守"，如：

French soldiers manned roadblocks in the capital city.法國士兵把守著首都的各路關(guān)卡。

所以我們要注意這個單詞主語可以直接把守，也可以是主語派人把守。但是今天原文的"another manned a first aid stand"里面another指的"醫(yī)護人員"，那這里的man很明顯是主語another"醫(yī)護人員"自己把守。所以翻譯為"還有醫(yī)護人員在急救站處工作"。

7. a first aid stand：固定表達，指"急救站"。"first aid"是"急救"的意思，"stand"作名詞可以表示"桌，臺，攤位"，例如a display stand 展位。

這里的"急救站"并不是真正意義上的"站點"（station）的含義，而是臨時搭建起來的一個急救點，所以用stand。

8. parasol美[?p?r?s??l]：n. 指"(海灘上、餐館外等處的)大遮陽傘 "。"under a large parasol"即"在大遮陽傘下"。

第三句：Cars were parked all the way around the bend of the road leading to the gate, simmering in the summer heat.

車輛從校門口一路停到路口轉(zhuǎn)彎處，在夏日的烈陽下都要蒸騰起來了。

1. parked：是"park"的過去分詞，表示"停車，泊車"。

如Ted上有句話：

I parked a different place every night.

每晚我都把車停在不同的地方。

2. all the way：指"一路……"。

《呼嘯山莊》里有一句話是這么說的：

Ive run all the way here from Wuthering Heights, she said, gasping for breath.

"我是從呼嘯山莊一路跑到這兒的，"她上氣不接下氣說道。

"all the way here"是一路到這兒，從某處是from。"here"、"there"前不加介詞，如"來這兒"come here。

如果是一路到什么地方，可以說all the way to，如果是到……周圍，就可以是all the way around，如這篇文章里的"一路停到路口轉(zhuǎn)彎處"， all the way around the bend of the road。around表示"周圍，四周"。

3. "the bend of the road"即"路口轉(zhuǎn)彎處"。Bend有很多意思，可以是動詞，扭曲、彎曲，不如"枉法"bend the law，其他意思大家可以看看詞典；也可以是名詞，不可數(shù)名詞，表示道路等的轉(zhuǎn)彎處，比如今天這里就是指轉(zhuǎn)彎處。

還比如：

The crash occurred on a sharp bend.

撞車發(fā)生在一個急轉(zhuǎn)彎處。

5. 原文"Cars were parked all the way around the bend of the road leading to the gate"的意思是，停放的車輛一路停到了通向校門口的路口的轉(zhuǎn)彎處。因為前面一直在說校門口處怎么怎么樣，所以翻譯時以"校門口處"為起點，即"車輛從校門口一路停到路口轉(zhuǎn)彎處"。

6. simmer 美[?s?m?r]：作動詞，指"用文火燉；煨；即將沸騰"。如：

Turn the heat down so the sauce simmers gently.

將爐火調(diào)小，用文火燉調(diào)味汁。

它也可以表示"（爭論、分歧等) 即將爆發(fā)；醞釀"。

如經(jīng)濟學人上所說：

The riots went on for two days and simmered for longer.

騷亂持續(xù)了整整兩天，其影響則延續(xù)更久。

原文的"simmering in the summer heat"是"用文火燉，即將沸騰"的意思，只不過它用了一種形象化的表述。"simmering in the summer heat."是現(xiàn)在分詞作伴隨狀語，表示車輛的狀態(tài)，是一種形象化的比喻手法。

"the summer heat"指"盛夏炎熱，夏天的酷熱"，它將車輛在太陽底下曝曬比喻為文火慢燉，表示曬得快要蒸騰了的含義，所以可以翻譯為"在夏日的烈陽下都要蒸騰起來了"。
