大家好！外刊空檔期給大家分享小說、美文、散文等雙語閱讀，今天給大家分享的是美國作家瑪格麗特·米切爾創(chuàng)作的長篇小說《飄》（Gone with the Wind）。它于1937年獲得了普利策文學(xué)獎。

小說以亞特蘭大以及附近的一個(gè)種植園為故事場景，刻畫了那個(gè)時(shí)代的許多南方人的形象，小說主人公斯嘉麗、瑞德、艾希禮、梅蘭妮等人是其中的典型代表。通過對斯嘉麗與白瑞德的愛情糾纏為主線，成功再現(xiàn)了林肯時(shí)期的南北戰(zhàn)爭以及美國南方地區(qū)的社會生活。

單詞解析

第一句："I wish to Heaven I was married," she said resentfully as she attacked the yams with loathing.

1. sb. wish to Heaven+句子：某人希望……如《安徒生童話》中這句：

I wish to Heaven I could walk in and take a trip right through the hearts of those present!

2. resentfully：忿忿地；憤恨地；悻悻然。如《哈利波特》這句：

1. 這整句都是某人說的話，是一連串的并列Im tired of ...即Im tired of ... Im tired of ... Im tired of ..., and Im tired of ...說明厭煩之極。

2. be tired of：對……感到厭煩；煩透了；膩了。如華爾街日報(bào)這句：

He said he was tired of the bickering and tension, the lack of communication, how they never did anything together anymore.

他說他們之間無休止的斗嘴爭執(zhí)、缺乏溝通以及不再一同做任何事情，這一切都讓他感到厭倦。

注意原文后面never get tired中的get tired是累，疲倦的意思，不是厭煩。

3. "矯揉造作"這里用的是unnatural這個(gè)詞。它表示不自然的，做作的。如柯林斯詞典這句：

She gave him a bright, determined smile which seemed unnatural.

她對他開朗、堅(jiān)定地一笑，但笑得有點(diǎn)不自然。

還有affectedly，意思就是裝模作樣地；不自然地。smile affectedly就是"假笑；矯揉造作地笑"。

pretentious美[pr??ten??s]也可以表示做作的；矯揉造作的。比如美劇臺詞中這個(gè)：pretentious giggle矯揉造作的笑。

還有一個(gè)詞contrived也可以形容"矯揉造作"，不過往往指sth. 如牛津詞典這句：

The humour of the play is self-conscious and contrived.

這部劇的幽默是刻意而為的，而且牽強(qiáng)做作。

4. faint美[fe?nt]：可以作形容詞，表示微弱的；淡淡的；暈眩的，快要暈厥的。比如華爾街日報(bào)中這句：

She experienced sudden sharp pains in her chest, felt faint and went unconscious.

她忽然感到胸口一陣劇痛，然后暈倒、不醒人事。

再比如經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人這句：

A faint smile seems to brush her lips as her mother touches her.

當(dāng)她母親觸摸她的時(shí)候，一絲淡淡的微笑似乎輕掠過她的唇邊。

今天這里是形容詞，放在feel后面，表示眩暈的。

這個(gè)單詞還可以作動詞，表示暈倒，暈厥。如柯林斯詞典這句：

5. fool：這里是動詞，表示愚弄，欺騙。如紐約時(shí)報(bào)中這句：

6. sense：sense有很多意思，在這里表示頭腦，見識，清醒的認(rèn)識。比如華爾街日報(bào)這句：

When I see an expensive car go by, all it tells me is that the owner is insecure and has no sense.

7. bite：在這里是名詞，意思是（對食物的）咬，一點(diǎn)兒食物。例如，他又咬了一口蘋果可以說He took another bite of apple.

拓展：bite這個(gè)詞作動詞時(shí)還可以表示產(chǎn)生嚴(yán)重或不良影響。如金融時(shí)報(bào)這句：

A slowdown in the overall growth of wealth among the 1, 000 people on the list also suggests the global economic slowdown has begun to bite.

8. 翻譯思維：they表泛指，所以可以翻譯為"他"，中文中"他"也可以用于泛指。第二個(gè)翻譯思路是先說事實(shí)，后表態(tài)，所以"煩透了"放句尾。
