"離開傷心地"英文怎么說？|《致青年》
今天給大家分享的是《西南聯(lián)大英文課》中的第十課《致青年》（A Word To Youth）。
《西南聯(lián)大英文課》原名《大學(xué)一年級英文教本》，原為西南聯(lián)大所有大一學(xué)生的必修課本，全書匯集了43篇人文社科文章，體裁多樣，內(nèi)容很好，推薦給大家。
而今天分享的這部分原載于1933年10月出版的《大西洋月刊》雜志，作者是法國傳記作家安德烈?莫洛亞（Andre Maurois，1885-1967）。他是傳記文學(xué)體裁的創(chuàng)始人。著名小說有《貝爾納?蓋奈》《布朗勃上校的沉默》《氣候》等，傳記有《雨果傳》《巴爾扎克傳》《雪萊傳》《拜倫傳》等。歷史著作有《美國史》《法國史》《英國史》等。最后一部作品是《文學(xué)生涯六十年》。

In present sorrow the mere abstract idea of future relief is comfortless. But life itself shows us the way to more active solace. We learn that we can cut loose from its most painful moments. Flee the place of grief and the ache will heal. Twenty miles . . . the thought of not seeing for some time those who have wounded us . . .and little by little unhappy memories fade. Better still, even without stirring from the spot, escape from torment is possible by the enjoyment of reading, of music, and of some form of creation. The function of Art in life is to substitute for futile and painful concentration upon oneself the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty.

單詞解析
第一句：In present sorrow the mere abstract idea of future relief is comfortless.
在當(dāng)前的悲愁中，"以后會好的"的想法并不能帶給我們多少安慰。
1. the mere abstract idea：字面意思是純粹抽象的想法/觀念/理念等，如紐約時報中這句：
Some people might see an image or video in the mind’s eye; others might think more in terms of abstract ideas or facts.
有的人可能通過心智看到圖像或視頻片段，有的人則可能更多側(cè)重于抽象概念或具體事實。
2. relief：本意是解脫，寬慰，安心，松口氣，比如："寬慰地笑"就可以說smile with relief；"松了口氣"可以說sigh with relief。
根據(jù)下文"cut loose from its most painful moments"、"Flee the place of grief and the ache will heal"（擺脫痛苦時刻，逃離傷心地）等內(nèi)容，future relief理解為"以后會好的"。生活中面臨痛苦的時候我們也常常這么說。
第二句：But life itself shows us the way to more active solace.
但生活本身教給我們用更積極的方法治療傷痛。

2. 原文shows us the way to more active solace是show sb sth的用法，其中sth就是the way to ...而且the way to sth指通往……的途徑/路徑/方法。

第三句：We learn that we can cut loose from its most painful moments.
我們學(xué)會了怎么擺脫最痛苦的時刻。
1. cut loose (from)：這個可以作不及物動詞，表示放松，狂歡，比如紐約時報上這句：
Last year, she began organizing alcohol-free pop-up events under the name Listen Bar for people who wanted to cut loose without alcohol playing a part.
去年，她開始為那些想放松又不想喝酒的人組織名為"傾聽吧"的無酒精活動。
we can cut loose from its most painful moments中是不及物動詞，直接是sb cut loose from，而表示某人擺脫……的時候現(xiàn)在多用及物動詞，也就是sb cut oneself loose from，或sb be cut loose from。比如詞典上這兩句：

它將脫離長期依附的國家，實現(xiàn)獨立自主。
He cut himself loose from his family.
他擺脫了家庭的束縛。

第四句：Flee the place of grief and the ache will heal.
離開傷心地，痛苦就可以得到醫(yī)治。
1. flee：逃離某地可以是flee sp，也可以是flee from sp。如：逃離這個國家 flee the country。再比如詞典這句：
People fled from the explosion in terror.
人們驚恐地逃離了爆炸現(xiàn)場。
2. the place of grief：當(dāng)作固定表達(dá)來記，指傷心地。grief是悲傷，悲痛，傷心的意思。比如《豪斯醫(yī)生》中這幾句臺詞：
I don’t think he’s moving the company out of greed. He’s moving it out of grief.
我想他并不是出于圖利而轉(zhuǎn)移公司的，他是要離開這個傷心之地。
3. heal：v. 表示治愈，愈合。傷口、創(chuàng)傷、痛苦等愈合都可以用這個詞。它常跟ache，wound(s)，bruises等詞搭配?？梢允羌拔飫釉~，如紐約時報這句：
Once, when he saw a bruise on the victim’s knee, he touched his lips there, saying that it will heal the wound.
有一次，他看到受害者膝蓋上有一塊淤青，就用嘴唇碰了碰，說這樣可以治好傷口。
還有，生活中常說的"時間會治愈傷痛"可以說Time will heal the wound.
也可以是不及物動詞，比如，"要花很長時間才能愈合"英文可以說take a long time to heal。再比如這句The bruises will heal in time. 今天the ache will heal中是不及物動詞，表示治愈、得到醫(yī)治。
第五句：Twenty miles . . . the thought of not seeing for some time those who have wounded us . . .and little by little unhappy memories fade.
逃到二十英里以外……想有一段時間不用看到那些傷害我們的人……一點一點地，那些痛苦的記憶就慢慢消退了。
1. the thought of doing sth.：……的想法，想到……the thought of也可以跟sth. 比如詞典上這兩句：
The thought of being left alone filled her with horror.
想到被孤零零地留下，她就不寒而栗。
The thought of the horrible scene made my flesh creep.
想起那可怕的情景，我渾身都起雞皮疙瘩。
2. 語法：seeing和those是連在一起的，即seeing的賓語是those who ...其中who have wounded us是those的定語從句；for some time表示一段時間。
3. little by little表示慢慢地，逐漸。
4. fade：動詞，可以表示（記憶）逐漸模糊，消失。經(jīng)常和memories, feelings搭配。如紐約時報這句：
The passage of time has created the space to speak about the truth, but also increased the urgency of doing so before remaining memories fade and another generation passes.

第六句：Better still, even without stirring from the spot, escape from torment is possible by the enjoyment of reading, of music, and of some form of creation.

It results mainly from various kinds of sufferings and torments (including self-inflicted torments). Torments ruin his talent while sufferings demoralize him. Though still alive as a man, he is dying or already dead as a writer.
torment還可以是動詞。如詞典這句：
At times the memories returned to torment her.
有時，她再度想起往事，又會痛苦萬分。
4. by the enjoyment of：通過享受……
5. by the enjoyment of reading, of music, and of some form of creation：其中of reading, of music, of some form of creation三個并列，這里重復(fù)了of，是為了強調(diào)。
第七句：The function of Art in life is to substitute for futile and painful concentration upon oneself the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty.
藝術(shù)在生活中的作用，就是讓我們不再專注于自身——這既痛苦又毫無意義，而是讓我們在對美的沉思中進(jìn)入寧靜和忘我的狀態(tài)。
1. substitute for：取代，替代。這是動詞短語，比如詞典這句：
Nothing can substitute for the advice your doctor is able to give you.
大夫所能給你的忠告是無可替代的。
substitute也可以是名詞，即a substitute for，如金融時報這句：
Gas has long been a substitute for oil in power generation.
在能源發(fā)電領(lǐng)域，天然氣長期以來一直是石油的替代品。

2. 注意：substitute for futile and painful concentration upon oneself the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty這部分，futile and painful concentration upon oneself是一個整體，the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty是一個整體，其中serene和selfless兩個形容詞并列，修飾contemplation；
如果正常語序的話，應(yīng)該是The function of Art in life is to substitute the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty for futile and painful concentration upon oneself，但是它要強調(diào)the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty這部分，所以放在了后面。所以譯文把它翻譯為：不再……而是……
不過這種估計也只在文學(xué)作品里見到，自己寫的時候還是按照常見的用法來，即substitute A for B。
3. futile美[?fju?tl]：adj. 徒然的，徒勞的，無效的。
4. serene美[s??ri?n]：adj. 平靜的，寧靜的，安詳?shù)?。比如金融時報上這句：
Without tourists, the National Gallery, while more serene, felt just a little underpopulated.
沒了游客，國家美術(shù)館盡管更寧靜了，但卻略顯寂寥。
serenity是它的名詞形式，如："平靜安詳?shù)母杏X"可以說a feeling of peace and serenity。
5. contemplation美[?kɑ?nt?m?ple??n]：n. 在這里是沉思，深思的意思。比如詞典這句：
He was lost in the contemplation of the landscape.
他對著眼前的景色沉思起來。
contemplation還可以表示凝視，默默注視，如：
She turned from her contemplation of the photograph. 她從凝視著的那張照片上移開目光。
原文the serene and selfless contemplation of Beauty即對美的沉思陷入了一種寧靜、忘我的狀態(tài)。
